Reading at Home

At Nevill Road Infant School, reading is always a priority!  We surround the children with rhymes, stories and picture books from the moment they join us in Little Brown Bears.  We also wish to encourage reading for pleasure and a love of books and stories, parents are crucial partners with this.

Every child should be experiencing some kind of reading every night and this will be different according to their ages and abilities.  At first this may simply be engaging with a soft book and this will progress to simple word books you may read to them or with them.  Children will progress on to book bands (a system that progresses through phonic difficulty) and may begin with longer books with no words offering the opportunity to tell the story in yours or their own words.  By the end of Year 2 children will be reading chapter books and need regular rehearsal both at home and at school.
